How do I switch my dog over to Flint River Ranch food?
First, determine how much food you are currently feeding your dog each day. FRR is so concentrated that you will feed 1/4 to 1/3 less than the food you feed now. Therefore, calculate 1/4 less food – that will be the amount of FRR you will feed each day. With Liberty, I switched her to FRR Puppy and Adult Kibble from Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. She was getting 4 cups of Natural Choice each day. When I switched Liberty completely over to FRR, I was feeding her 3 cups FRR per day. All dogs should be fed twice a day – therefore, Liberty went from 2 cups Natural Choice each meal to 1-1/2 cups FRR each meal. Since your dog will be getting less FRR, you should decrease the total amount of food slowly as you increase the amount of FRR.
If your current dog food is a natural or premium food (examples are Nutro, Science Diet, Hills, Iams, Pro Plan – foods usually found in a pet store), it will take less time to switch completely over to FRR than if the food is not as high quality (Pedigree, Kibbles 'N Bits, Gravy Train, Ol' Roy – foods from a grocery store). Any food that contains By-Products or Meat Meal (which can be meat from any mammal including dogs and cats - see FDA Investigates Dog Food Mystery) is a lower quality food. The reason it will take longer to switch over is that your dog's digestive system must be acclimated to high-quality natural ingredients. For more information, read The Truth About Commercial Pet Foods.
The first time I fed Liberty FRR, I gave her 1-1/2 cups Natural Choice combined with 1/2 cup FRR. I did that for 2 or 3 meals. Then I combined 1/2 of each food – 1 cup Natural Choice and 3/4 cup FRR (notice the decrease in the total amount of food). I did this for 2 or 3 meals. Then I combined 1/2 cup Natural Choice and 1 cup FRR. Finally, I fed her 1-1/2 cups FRR. Notice that the total amount of food started at 2 cups, then decreased to 1-3/4 cups and finally to 1-1/2 cups. This gradual decrease allows your dog to expect less food. What you want to do is combine about 3/4 old food with 1/4 FRR, then 1/2 of each, then 1/4 old food with 1/2 FRR, then all FRR. If you're switching from a lower quality food you should feed each combination for 4 or 5 meals before you adjust the amounts.
You can adjust the amounts and times depending upon the quantity of old food you have and whether or not your dog develops loose stools. Once on only FRR food, your dog should have smaller, firmer stools.
If your dog develops diarrhea, stop feeding the dog food. Your dog is having a reaction to the difference in the quality of the two foods. The best thing is to immediately discontinue feeding the old food. Skip the next meal – this helps to calm the digestive tract. For the following meal, give cooked white rice (amount equal to the total amount of dog food you were giving) combined with a chopped hard-boiled egg. Do this until the stools are normal (should be the next day). The rice will then take the place of the old food. You should decrease the rice as you increase the FRR food. You can continue to give the egg until you have switched completely over to FRR. The egg helps prevent loose stools and is considered to be 100% nutritionally complete.
This seems complicated but it's not. By explaining the transition completely I'm hoping to eliminate any digestive upset.
Liberty liked to have a "warm" breakfast. I would run the hot water and quickly pass her food bowl through the stream of water. Then I would stir it a little, which would release a healthy-smelling aroma.
Are you certain I will feed my dog 1/4 to 1/3 less FRR food?
What you end up feeding could be even less. With Liberty, when I switched her completely over to FRR, I gave her 1-1/2 cups twice a day. That's 1/4 less food (3 cups FRR instead of 4 cups Nutro Natural Choice). In 6 weeks she was 5 pounds overweight! After I took off the extra weight, I gave her 1-1/4 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening for the rest of her life. That's almost 1/2 less food!
Monitor your dog's weight carefully. You don't want your dog to be 5 pounds overweight before you take action. Liberty was not happy when she was losing the extra pounds. A good way to check is to run your hands along each side of your dog's rib cage. Usually, when the dog is an ideal weight the last 2 ribs should feel more prominent than the others. If you think you need to feed less FRR, begin with lowering the amount fed in the evening. Dogs need less food at night than during the day.
This is a good place to mention the proper storage of FRR foods (since there are no artificial preservatives). Read the Care and Storage of FRR Products in the May 2002 Newsletter.
My dog no longer has a problem with fleas.
Could her new FRR food be the reason?
Fleas are attracted to dogs and cats with skin problems brought on by having inadequate nutrition. The fleas irritate the skin even more and your pet scratches and chews, making matters worse.
The high quality ingredients in FRR foods should resolve any skin problems within a month or so. Because of her age I was concerned about Liberty getting so many chemicals internally, so I switched her from Sentinel (heartworm and flea protection) to Heartgard (heartworm protection only). She had been eating FRR food for a few months. That summer she went with me to all the dog shows where I promoting Flint River Ranch and never had even one flea. I know this because she was very allergic to fleas bites and would chew and scratch her skin raw wherever she got bitten. She also never had another hot spot after she went on FRR food.
In natural healing, symptoms are cured in accordance with Hering's Four Laws of Direction:
- From the head down,
- From the inside out,
- In reverse order as the symptoms first appeared,
From the most important system to the least important.
Constantine Herring was a dedicated disciple of Samuel Hahnemann, the Founder of Modern Homeopathy.
The skin may be the body's largest organ, but it is probably the least important.
Does Flint River Ranch make a canned dog food?
FRR does one better! FRR DryWater for Dogs is a canned food where you add the water. DryWater has over 70 ingredients that include fresh chicken, garden vegetables, whole grains, herbs, vitamins, probiotics and minerals. The specialized all-natural ingredients are blended and prepared utilizing a combination of freeze drying, dehydration, heat drying, moist cooking and oven-baking.
The first time I fed it to Liberty it smelled so good that I just had to taste it – it tasted healthy, but bland.
Liberty had DryWater only occasionally. With all those ingredients, I was certain that her body would have anything it needed to keep her healthy.
FRR Lamb/Millet/Rice (LMR) was introduced in the middle of 1999. It contains no wheat, which commonly causes an allergic reaction. Of course, it contains no corn. There is no corn in any FRR dog food. There is also no chicken in LMR – it is lamb-based and contains Menhaden Fish Meal. It also contains probiotics and digestive enzymes.
LMR is the best food that FRR makes. Two months after it was introduced, I switched Liberty over to it. She remained on LMR until she passed away in April 2000 at the age of 11-1/2. I believe that older dogs need a higher plane of nutrition rather than a lower plane like that found in Senior dog foods. The digestive tract is wearing out, so why cause it to overwork trying to get the nutrition your dog needs.
My dog is developing arthritis.
Does FRR have something that will help?
When I noticed that Liberty was starting to get a little stiff (when she lay down or got up), I replaced the Dog Bone Treats that I gave her after each meal with JUBILEE WAFERS In a few weeks, with only 2 or 3 JUBILEE WAFERS a day, I noticed that she was back to her old self with no trace of discomfort. Liberty had always moved like a well-oiled machine – she had beautiful suspension. Years before, when we were in obedience classes, people would always comment on how she floated. During what turned out to be our last walk together, I noticed how happy she was and how easily she gaited along the bayou. That picture will always be with me.
It has been my experience that the claims made in the JUBILEE WAFERS information are understated. Many of my customers have told me how well the JUBILEE WAFERS have worked on their dogs within a short period of time.
In October 2001, FRR introduced Senior PLUS food. It has the same formula as the Senior food but has Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate added to help maintain healthy joint cartilage. If Liberty were still here, I would still continue to feed her Lamb/Millet/Rice and JUBILEE WAFERS instead of switching over to the Senior PLUS.

My cat is always throwing up hair balls. Can FRR food help?
In January 2002, FRR introduced Hairball Management Formula. It contains Oat Fiber to help support healthy digestion. Reported results have been remarkable.
When I began my Web site, I decided to switch my mother's cat, Tiger, to FRR cat food. He had been on Nutro Natural Choice since Mom got him in December '99. He has long hair and had been throwing up a hair ball about every week or so, regardless of how often he was brushed. FRR Hairball Management Formula had just become available so I ordered a 6 pound bag. Tiger threw up three hair balls in about 10 days during the transition period while he was on both foods. Since he has been completely on the Hairball Management Formula, he has not thrown up even one hair ball! I was so impressed, my next order was a 20 pound bag.
